January Glossybox Review 2014

Unfortunately I don't think I've seen one review of this months Glossybox that was positive. I was in two minds whether to send mine back for a refund but a few products in the box I really did want to test out. My box was generally I feel one of the best sent. Last month Glossybox stopped there Miss Glossybox subscription and I do believe the products that were sent out this month were what was meant to be in that subscription package. With non being "luxury". I have always been a huge fan of Glossybox but this month was extremely disappointing. Hopefully they pick up there game again and send out some wonderful items.

What do you think of this months box?

January Birchbox Review 2014

This is the last box i'm subscribed too from Birchbox and am still unsure whether to re buy. This month the theme was Tiny Tweaks and Birchbox seemed to have made a few tweaks themselves. Unlike the usual cute bag that the products come in they have swapped for pink tissue paper. It made the package seem quite light and empty. They have also started a magazine this month full of tips and product information, which is a nice touch. The products I received were all quite small samples of high quality items. Although its nice to receive things from this market a full size product of some sort is always a pleasant bonus. I was really happy to have got a tester from Benefit being from The Pore Fessional range. I've been uming and aghing whether to buy this for a long time so cant wait to test it out. The other items are quite simple products that didn't really stand out in the box.

Would you re-subscribe?

What I Bought This Month (Too Much In The January Sales)

OMG I did wonder where all my money went this month!! Obviously now I realize that it went on January sales. I do love a good bargain every now and now though (no that isn't a typo). I think one of my New Years Resolution's  should of been to learn to say "No Clare put that down!". Ow well maybe next year. But for the rest of this one I shall revel in my purchases and eat baked beans out of a tin. Yum Yum.

Did you pick up any bargains this month?

Roar Your Way Out Of Winter

Leopard Print can be a little too daring for some people but used as an accessory can be a subtle statement piece. Team an ankle boot with a full black outfit to create a look envious to most.

Tips to Remember:
1. Stick to one piece of leopard print to help not pattern clash.
2. Keep the rest of your outfit simple and let the animal print do the talking.
3. Black will be your best friend when choosing a stand out piece.
4. Have fun with it, Fashion is to be played with.

Find your wild side

Loreal Skincare Collection Review

A little review for you today. Instead of reviewing just the one product I thought it would be more beneficial for you all to read about the collection and how the products work together.

I am loving these products by L'oreal. There Skin Perfection Cleanser, Toner and Micellar solution are all suitable for sensitive skin and are Hypo-allergenic. Even in my most sensitive of skin days I have never felt these irritate or dry my skin.

The micellar solution removes make-up with ease and am sure finds dirt that was not visible. I feel it digs down deep rather than just taking surface impurities helping to shrink pores in the process.
The skin perfection cleanser and toner work as well as the solution. There both creamy but not over greasy and sink into the skin quickly. The perfect companion's for those in a rush or on the move. I would feel comfortable using these as my only skincare products. They leave my skin feeling squeaky clean, hydrated and silky smooth, what else could a girl wish for.

As for the moisturizer also by L'oreal it is designed for dry and sensitive skin, I wouldn't recommend it for other skin types. It contains Vitamin E and Vitamin B5, Ceramide and Glycerin. The Glycerin helps to aid your skins natural ability to retain moisture helping to improve skin hydration. The cream is thick and slightly gel like, despite this it sinks into skin quickly and keeps me hydrated throughout the day. After application my skin feels velvety to the touch, supple and plumped. I find many moisturizers designed for dry skin make me break out over night but thankfully this hasn't even though I use morning and night.

What collections have you enjoyed recently?

What I Ate Wednesday

Breakfast
I'm really trying to find a food that I like for breakfast. Cereals, porridge's and fruit are my sworn enemies and I take better too eggs, sausage, bacon and beans!!
Not the healthiest options I know. So i'm attempting to be a good girl and keep trying. Bleurrgghhh!
This morning I had Wheetabix, Raspberries and skimmed milk.
Total Calories: 209

Lunch
This very simple looking lunch was actually delicious and a nice change from my usual stodgy sandwiches. I had cooked a whole chicken the night before so used this with a few pieces of wafer thin ham on the side of a salad. I added light salad cream for a bit of flavor and two rye breads to give it some substance.
Total calories: 174

Snack Time
OOPSY! Mid afternoon I fancied something sweet so relented for a Happy Hippo chocolate biscuit and strong coffee and may I add a very cute Eeyore mug.
This is what happens when you have children (what a lame excuse)
Chocolate calories: 117

Dinner
I love a nice warming tea in the Winter and this is one of my healthy favorites. Made totally from scratch it is a great portion of Calcium, Vitamins and just plain old goodness. I've put the recipe up HERE if you would like to give it a try.
Total Calories: 497

How To Make A Healthy But Hearty Fish Pie

Hello savvy cookers welcome to
"How to Tuesdays"
I thought I would share with you a lovely warming winter meal. This is my own receipe and appreciate everyone will have there own version's and methods.

What you will need:
Fish of your choice (I used Haddock and Salmon)
Tinned Sweetcorn
One onion (optional)
Potatoes (sweet or white or both)
50g Butter
Garlic
Parsley
Plain flour
400ml Skimmed milk (or fuller fat if you prefer)
Cheese (also optional)

First things first. Start your fish off cooking. I chose to use a steamer but you can bake, microwave or boil if you wish. Using a steamer will help to reduce the calorie's in your meal but also locks in the goodness and moisture. I set mine to approximately 20-25 minutes for four fillets of fish. In this case I used two Salmon and two Haddock.

White fish sauce
1. In a saucepan place your butter. Melt over a low heat.
2. Once the butter has melted add plain flour in small amounts. You want to create a paste similar to that of sticky toffee pudding sauce.
3. When you have your paste add your choice of milk in small amounts, stirring continuously until your sauce is almost water thin.
4. Keep adding milk and stirring through out cooking.

Once you have your sauce to the consistency that you like you can add other ingredients. I always like to add a large pinch of parsley and half a teaspoon of garlic to inject a little flavor. You can also add more solid ingredients such as Sweetcorn and cooked onion.

Next you need to make your topping. I chose to use a mixture of both white and sweet potatoes but this is entirely your preference.

1. Boil your peeled and chopped potatoes until soft.
2. Drain water from cooked potatoes.
3. Place potatoes back into the pan and add milk and butter to your own taste.
4. Mash your potatoes until smooth.
5. Leave to one side until other ingredients are fully cooked.
6. Once everything is cooked spread your potaoes on top of your pie.

If you would like to add some extra goodness to your meal. Try boiling/steaming some broccoli to go along side your pie.

When your fish has finished cooking, mix together with your sauce and place in an oven proof dish. Set your oven to 160c.

Layer your pre-prepared potatoes on top of your mix. At this stage you can add cheese to the top of your pie. I used a 30% less fat cheddar cheese to keep the fat content down.

When you have finished putting your pie together carefully place into a pre heated oven to bake.

Enjoy straight from the oven.
Don't burn your mouth!!!

My Current Skincare Routine

Hello Savvyions!!

After 23 years I finally feel I have cracked my skincare regime. I have adult prone acne and over sensitive dry skin, so tackling both issue's can be a problem.

In the morning I try to keep my cleaning process quite simple to avoid over drying. I like to use a good scrub to help shrink my pores. My current favorite that is suitable for everyday is by St Ives and is there Apricot scrub for sensitive skin. The texture is gritty rather than the alternative of beads. I always feel an instant improvement to my skin after using this, pores are diminished and flakey skin removed. For me the perfect start to the morning.

If my skin is having a particularly healthy day and scrub just doesn't seem necessary I usually grab for L'oreals skin perfection cleanser and toner. Again these products are designed to aid dry and sensitive skin. Both cleanser and toner feel creamy but not over greasy.

After a hard day's slog in a face full of make up I remove the layers with another fabulous product from L'oreal this time it is there micellar solution. This is the best make up remover I have tried for my type of skin. Although many claim to be appropriate for sensitive skin none have agreed with me including the very hyped about Bioderma. L'oreal's remover can be used for eye makeup and doesn't (thankfully) burn my eyeballs out. I apply this using cotton pads. Once I've removed all remnants I like to use Superdrug's hot cloth cleanser in circular motions. Every now and again my skin feels slightly irritated but once removed the feeling subsides in several minutes leaving no evidence. You read the review of this cleanser here. I finish off my routine with a moisturizer which I use both day and night, L'oreal's triple active cream.

Once a week I use soap and glory's peaches and clean as a face mask. I usually apply while taking a long shower. I find it helps to remove all the yuckiness from my skin by giving it a deep cleanse.

My skincare routine is pretty simple I think and is currently working for me. I have a lot of other products but didn't want to bore you in too next week reading about the contents of my bathroom cupboard. The only other product I haven't mentioned on this list that I use daily is Skinetica. I use this on breakout's only as it can be drying if over used. Last year I found this to be a skin savior  for myself and am now on my fourth bottle.
I hope this may have helped someone to (attempt to) find the perfect skincare routine. If you would like anymore information on these products please leave me a comment and I will answer as best as I can.

Any dreams products you think I MUST try?

Pyjamas to Chic

We can all be costumed to the odd lazy day but if the New year is leaving you rather tired out and exhausted don't make a fashion faux pas by leaving the house in something you will later regret. If your having one of those days when all you want to do is sit around in your PJ's and bury your greasy wig head in the sand, remember fashion is your friend and does not need to be hard work.
  • Play around with trends
  • Your clutch bag from the night before can be the perfect arm candy, don't waste time changing bags.
  • Just trade a baggy jumper for a slouchy Parka to be any weather ready.
  • Always remember the great tip of hiding scruffy hair with a comfortable beanie.
  • Make sure your back home in time for a second date with those PJ's by wearing a chunky watch.
  • Alter your posture by replacing the Gym shoes with a wedge trainer.
  • Say bye bye to figure fattening Jogging bottoms and hello to figure hugging Jeans, too many mince pies this Christmas gave us all the booty we dreamed of.

Much love Miss Savvy xoxo

What I Ate Wednesday

With the New Year kicking in I felt it was time to get my healthy head back on and the running legs screwed back in. I'm taking it slow for the first week then going to pick up the pace a little next week.

For breakfast I had Alpen porridge made with almond milk and topped off with a banana. I wish I could tell you I enjoyed my meal but I'm really not a fan of cereals or porridge's but I will be a good girl and keep trying.

 Lunch
A baked sweet potato filled with virtually fat free cottage cheese. On the side I made a salad with no dressing just a side of wafer thin ham. Sweet potatoes are much healthier than ordinary white potatoes and make for a lovely lunch. Try them as Jackets, Chips, Wedges or Mash as a healthier alternative.

Dinner
This plate looks extremely full! It is my partners plate, I ate mine before I remembered to take the picture OOPS!! My dinner was a really simple recipe that I threw together in 30 Minutes. I used Wholewheat Pasta twirls, Vegetarian red onion and thyme sausages, sliced peppers and a tomato and garlic pasta sauce. It was delicious, if I say so myself.

Quite a dull day for food but a step in the right direction. I am no Food blogger hopefully my pictures will improve over time (well fingers crossed that's for sure).

Going To The Chapel- OOTN

Last week I attended a friends wedding with the other half. It was a short time for us two adults to let lose with out children. The drinks were flowing and somewhere in an alchoholic mist I realised I hadn't photographed my outfit. Beer goggles firmly on I didn't think it would be my brightest idea to stare boggle eyed into a camera lens. It was a really cold day so my beautiful River Island Faux Fur jacket got pulled out of the closet to keep me warm.

December Birchbox VS Christmas Glossybox 2013

Yes that's right an extremely late Christmas beauty box comparison. The first one that arrived on my door step along with half the streets post was Birchbox and recently my favourite of the two.

Nail Rock Velvet Manicure in Navy

I can't say I've ever tried one of these sets and feel a tutorial brewing for you or even a tutorial for me!! The box says to apply two coats of polish, dip the nail into the velvet and leave to dry for 15-20 minutes. I feel an accent nail would look nice with the effect rather than a full hand.
Full size £6.99 (Full size received)

Naobay Moisturising Milk Cleanser
After finding a love for Superdrug's hot cloth cleanser, I have been hoping to try out a few more different ones.
Full size £12.95 (50ml received)

Bee kind Body Lotion
This lotion smells like Lemon meringue and I still haven't decided whether this is a positive or a negative. It is quite a light formula which spread's easily.
Full size £12.95 (30ml received)

N4 Non Aerosol Hair Spray
I love the idea of this spray and so far I have only lightly tested it. Look out for a full review.
Full size £18.50(43ml received)

Alima Shimmer Eyeshadow
First impressions- MESSY!!
Full size £12.50

Lipsy Glam Eau De Toilette
A mature scent practical for evening.
Full size £18.00(2ml received)

Twist Band in Cream
I wear these bands daily to drag my hair out of my face. Slightly thinner than my usual ones but would be great for fine haired goddess's.
£10.00 for 6 (1x band received)

Overall a good selection of products none of these particularly scream Christmas to me but I will enjoy using/trying all of them. 3/5

Glossybox have really made an effort with their packaging for Christmas. A deep red box with sketched beauty items in the shape of a Christmas tree. Inside the usual tissue paper is embossed with candy canes and tied with a white ribbon.

Beautiful Movements Nude Lip Gloss
Nice little lipgloss to throw into your handbag.
Full size £12 for 8ml (4ml received)

Wilkinson Sword Intuition Naturals Razor
I love these razors. I have quite sensitive skin and the Naturals Razor is one of very few to not bring me out in a shaving rash.
Full size £6.49 (full size received)

Maybelline Color Tattoo in shade 35 on and on bronze
I feel one of the best products to be released in 2013. Maybelline really came up trumps with these gel formulated eyeshadows. If you don't own one go get one.
Full size £4.99 (full size received)

Seche Nail Polish in shade Not easily swept away
I've never tried a polish from this brand but have always been tempted by them.
Full size £9.95 (full size received)

Sanctuary Spa Reverse Resurface & Refine Ultra Polish
Nice little scrub sample by the ever popular Sanctuary Spa.
Full size £12 for 200ml (15ml received)

Once again not very Christmassy related but a nice selection of products from the high street, that I know I will get lots of use from. Again 3/5 for me.

I'm still trying to decide which subscription to cancel. Which box do you love?
